ID:	303229Visualise the scenario - President Martin McGuinness is guest of honour at the first formal dinner hosted by chief of staff of the Republic's defence forces, Major General McCann.

In accordance with protocol, General McCann will be obliged to propose a toast to Mr McGuinness, president and commander-in-chief.

Acutely conscious of Mr McGuinness's past and recent history, will there be one - or more, or many - of those present who will feel honour-bound to remain seated, or maybe even walk out?

If, to a man, they all stand and raise their glasses to their commander-in-chief, will they recall the stinging words of a former colleague and coach to an Irish rugby team - "Where's your f*****g pride?"

As a Section commander I carried photo's of wanted men. McGuinness was at the top of the list. Allowing him to walk the halls of our parliament building or paying him any kind of respect be it from our government or any other is obscene. Why is he still alive?

Had the same book in 73/74 mate. He was only spotted a couple of times but gave us the slip. Went back 18 months later and he was lording it over the local population and we couldn't lay a hand on him or his brother. Very hard for a lowly squaddie to comprehend when he walks past you in the city with that twisted sneer on his face. The temptation to wipe it off was almost too hard to resist.
I think they call it self discipline.
