remember Paul well,taught me some led zeppelin on the guitar, he died because they wouldnt transport us out of the camp gates,an easy ambush,bitter memory even now....

Agreed mate. As far back as 1973, it was normal practice at any base where the gates could be easily targetted, that footsies were dropped off by mobiles and picked up as well at the end. For some reason they stopped doing it with tragic results. Paul wasn't the only one killed because of it.

I used to shake my head and wonder at some of the things we put up with, thought the later tourists would have learnt from our early mistakes but it does not seem to be the case.
Stand easy Gnr, duty done. We were doing TOURS therefore tourists.

he was the first soldier to be killed by an american m60 machine gun the ira had tied up an oap couple and fired from the back bedroom through the wriggly tin, i believe he was out with several of the unit that was taking over from us he died instantly i was in the int room when we heard the firing. we got the m60 and ammo and several other weapons i still have the photo RIP

Yes, it does look a mess which was highlighted to certain parties. But I've been assured that it has been given a good clean up.
