15 March, 1975
'Tom' was involved in a RTA on the Strabane-L'Derry road. The Land Rover he was travelling overturned and he died of his injuries.
"Dennis (Tom) was one of those soldiers you just knew was going to go all the way in his army career. He was professional and well respected by all. On 15 March 75 I was with Tom (as he was known by his friends - after the old song, 'Hang down your head Tom Dooley') at Sion Mills base camp. We were playing cards with a couple of other 2 platoon lads.
Tom had to leave the game before it finished as he had a detail to carry out I honestly can't remember what the detail was but it was not an active patrol.
It meant that he had to travel to Londonderry. He took a landrover and driver. His last words to me were just a normal 'See you when I get back' "
Sgt Dooley is not mentioned in any of the usual sources, but his name is on the AFM.
Always remembered.
