Sgt. Anthony Butcher
RAOC Bomb Disposal
Killed on 15th March 1972
Aged 24 years
He was killed along with his colleague, S/Sgt. Christopher Cracknell when, just after 5pm, the IRA placed a booby-trapped car in the middle of Willow Street, just off the Grosvenor Road in Belfast. The 20lb device had been left on the back seat of the vehicle and was spotted by an Army patrol. A controlled explosion was used to open the boot of the car, but it failed to trigger the main device, which exploded as the team later approached the vehicle for a closer inspection. Two revolvers were later found in the vehicle.
Brave men and true.
