On the morning of Monday 9 April 1990, Pte John Birch, LCpl John Bradley, LCpl Michael Adams and Pte Steven Smart, all members of the Ulster Defence Regiment, were murdered by PIRA in an attack on their mobile patrol on Ballydugan Road, Downpatrick.
The four soldiers were travelling as part of a two Land Rover patrol on route from Ballykinlar to Downpatrick when a 1000lb bomb, placed in a culvert beneath the road, was detonated by command wire.
The morning of that attack is something I will never forget. We will think of the men, especially on the 9th April, but will remember them always.
I'm posting this today as I'll be spending the day in the hills tomorrow. Please take a moment tomorrow to remember the four lads.
