My newly found friend for such a short time, Eric Shielles.
It was my 19th birthday and and I was returning home from the province after a 4 month emergency tour. Eric said he would toast me. He never got the chance! In his place today, I have my memories and a certain tree to talk to. The world can be so full of darkness yet at times, so full of light!

The local Tyrone flaura and fauna that we both loved so much, is still a big part of my life today.

8th (Co. Tyrone) Battalion Ulster Defence Regiment
Part Time (G Coy)
Eric had previous service with the Royal Navy.
He was married with six children.
Eric, a local businessman and Part-Time Soldier with the Regiment, was callously MURDERED by the IRA on 29th April 1977 when they shot him as he got into his car outside his home in Dungannon.
He was 49 years old.

Those who carried out this (and numerous other) murder now walk the streets with freedom and immunity. Through our Remembering may the world never forget their Service, their Sacrifice and the sheer injustice of it all.

Never forgotten.
