After nearly a year in the Army, in late January 1977 I was packing my kit for my 1st trip in an Aeroplane, a VC10 from Brize Norton to The Gambia. We were told it would be 126F in the shade, over 50C, I just remember it was hot! Dressed in OG's, with green jungle boots too narrow for my size 7 feet, a floppy bush hat I took the "Dog of War" and I think "Devils Guard" to read on the plane.

On return it was straight into Northern Ireland training for my 1st Tour there, South Armagh, July-December 1977. 1st patrol Crossmaglen Square. I had a lot of firsts that year, 1st Passport occupation "Government Service", 1st troop train, 1st LSL ship across the Irish Sea, 1st helicopter ride. 1st casualty, one lad blinded by an IED in Cullyhanna.

    We will remember them.

So, another year passes, at 0600 on the morning of 23rd January 1977 my section went on stag for a 16 hour shift. Don't remember anything of note happening until we clocked off at 2200. Reported in at the int cell NTR but for some reason didn't hand in my pye set. Then heard the contact report in the cookhouse enroute to my pit and all hell broke loose. That was a long night during which we heard we'd lost George. RIP mate, lest we forget.

Yes mate. That four month period, October to January was a bad time for us Gunners. Abbot, Murphy, Muller then George not to mention young Steve Nicholson as well.
        Rest easy mucker.

I didn't know you George, but you were a brother in arms and well liked by your regimental colleagues. Rest in peace.

I was top cover in Thomas Street Sanger when the news of George's death was announced although his name wasn't announced at the time. Today I know his tree quite well today after being introduced to it by Graham. Lest I forget........
