I recall the cover of 'Visor' just a few weeks before this. PIRA had parked a flatbed lorry in the houses just behind Forkhill. Can't recall how many if any had functioned but the Colonel did a 'piece to camera' with a BBC crew. After this the press began to move off when, as two RUC officers began to check the lorry cab, a booby-trap went off under the driver's seat. As a Belfast Telegraph photographer snapped like mad, the CO ran back, got one of the officers out of the cab, found a pulse, and then helped get the wounded man onto a door, on which he was moved to a waiting Puma and casevaced. He and his colleague survived their injuries, thanks to the fast response from the CO. Swift And Bold.

There was some damage to the Forkhill base and an RCT driver was injured whilst in the ablutions, luckily the hut was almost empty at the time. The wiki article mentions the mortar attack though gives a wrong date for the gazelle incident.

I was Battalion Int from the previous regiment, not long back from my first NI Tour, watching it on TV when I saw the RUC man, who had briefed me on my famil on Forkhill, climb into the cab. I shouted at the screen NO! Then the booby trap exploded.

The Colonel - RIP

A bit late on parade as I was away for a couple of days.

Another year passes since this tragic incident in which we lost our highly respected CO. RIP.

There is a commemoration service for the colonel being held on 19th March at Winchester cathedral involving what's called a "turning of the page" of the book. Meet up at the Cathedral cafe at 1015hrs and advance to the Cathedral at 1050hrs. The colonel's widow and sons will be attending this. Contact on FB is Tiny Adams. Sadly, we arrive at that time of year again. Forty two years since our CO went out on a helicopter recce never to return. We were well into the tour and this came as a great shock to all.
