  • Drummer Frank Arnold Fallows, 10/11/1976

Jock - I was talking to a bloke who was 1 Royal Hampshires and did their 76-77 tour, he mentioned about an 18 year old who was shot by a UDR soldier in Maghera in 1976.
Checking the NIVA archives I found a Dmr Fallows but he is listed as 1 Cheshires and being killed in Magheralin.
The bloke confirmed the details - the young lad was taking over stag and there was an 'occurrence' with an SMG that was being handed over.
As a result the young man was killed instantly.

24318969 Drummer Frank Arnold Fallows (18) 1 Royal Hampshire Regiment - fatally shot accidentally at Maghera RUC station, 10/11/1976.

    For your information.

Bit of a coincidence that as we have just been discussing this one. A newspaper article about his death was obtained from the Belfast Telegraph archives which confirmed that he was accidently shot and the fact that it happened at Maghera. He was in fact 19 years old but although he was serving with the Royal Hampshire Regiment at that time, his parent unit was the Cheshire Regiment. So he must have been one of those who volunteered. This was quite common amongst infantry and cavalry units who were on 18 months - 2 year tours.
I have already changed the location on the ROH master sheet and it will show on line when we do the next update. We do have a photo of his grave, but its not a very good one and I'm hoping for a better one soon.
Thanks for that Stevie. Shows you are paying attention.
