Sgt Michael Unsworth R HAMPS 2nd Jan 1977 I can not find how he died.
He came from Southampton born on the 13 December 1945. He was 31. He lays to rest in Tidworth Military Cemetery.


L/Cpl David Hind RHF was 23 years of age when he was shot by sniper while on British Army foot patrol, Crossmaglen, County Armagh.
He came from Kilmarnock were he was born on the 04 December 1953. He was laid to rest in in his home town .


Pte Alan Maule UDR This young man died at age of died at the age of 19.
He was born on the 08 November 1963 he came from Newtown Abbey, Co Antrim. He died on the 02 January 1983. A young man who did his duty while others sat at home.


Pte Gregory Elliott UDR . A man from from Castlederg Co Tyrone. born on the 21 January 1958 he was 25 years of age when died on the on this day in 1984. His duty done he lays at rest at the New Cemetery Castlederg.


They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

1 R Hamps were the L'derry resident battalion (Ebrington) at the time of Sgt Unsworth's death. Another of the 'Missing Fallen'.

Of Pte Maule sadly I can find no details.

Pte Elliott was shot at the wheel of his van outside his house. At least 14 rounds from a handgun and a rifle were fired at him.

Two months later another member of 6 UDR, Pte Thomas Loughlin, was killed. Greg Elliott had been a guest at his wedding. The bridesmaid, Heather Kerrigan, and the best man, Norman McKinley, both UDR, were killed later the same year.

Sgt Mick Unsworth, was Bn Int cell, based at Kilrea Police station on the morning he died, we were resident bn in Ballykelly. The morning he took off I was practising with my new camera (a Zenit e with 150mm zoom lens hi tech at the time) I took the last picture of Mick before he died as they took off in the Scout helicopter that crashed into the River Bann.It was alledged it was shot down but never confirmed, his metal body armour prevented him reaching the surface in the fast flowing river.

One of the places I am going this month to lay a wreath at the place they died.

Mick Unsworth was Int C/Sgt based at Kilrea RUC station,(Resident Bn at Ballykelly, not Ebrignton) he left at 0830 hrs in a Scout Helicopter from the field to the rear of the RUC Station and flew off towards Maghera, on the way, the Helicopter suffered mechanical failure and because the pilot and Mick were wearing the "new" steel body armour when the helicopter crashed into the fast flowing River Bann they had no chance of swimming to safety. He is buried in Tidworth Military Cemetary. I was one of the last to see him alive as he took off as I took a photo of the chopper as it took off that morning, I still have the photos and it haunts me to this day, as they took off there was a sudden downpour of rain, only over the the RUC station outside was bone dry, a sort of premonition!!! RIP Tiger....

I've just spent the last two hours going through all sources of Op Banner fatalities and I can't find any member of the Northern Ireland Regiment Army Air Corps who died on the 2 January 1973 or shortly after. It may be that the pilot and crew survived the crash.
We do have Sgt Unsworth on our Roll of Honour and I photographed his gravestone when I visited Tidworth Military Cemetery last year.
