I regret the lateness of this entry, but I thought it important.
1st Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
L/Cpl William McIntyre, 23, married with one child, from Aberdeen
Pte Duncan McPhee, 21 single, from Paisley
Pte Douglas Richmond, 21, single, from Clydebank
The three soldiers were killed, and five comrades injured, when their Saracen drove over an IED near Dungannon.
The vehicle ended up on its roof, and the deaths and injuries were caused by being thrown about inside the vehicle. The device was estimated at between 400-500 lbs, the largest device encountered at that time, and left a crater 30 feet wide and 25 feet deep. A civilian drove his Mini into the crater but was only slightly hurt.
At the inquest one soldier spoke of seeing a car approach the crater, then turn and drive away. "This happened four times. No car would stop"
L/Cpl McIntyre had just returned from leave, spent with his wife and 16-month-old son.
Pte Richmond was due to go on leave - both his parents were deaf, and the news of his death had to be conveyed to them in sign language.
