I have looked through my old regimental journals without success, a nagging thought says he was from Barnsley but I maybe mistaken. He was attached to us for our tour, I am sure he volunteered to come with us from his unit 50 Missile Regiment who were based down the road from us at Menden. If there are any ex 50 Missile Regiment members from the early 1980's they may know more, sorry.

No problem mate. I'm ex Gunners myself and I know that there were many volunteers from the Missile Regiments because their unit was not allowed to leave BAOR as they were permanent NATO. Those volunteers took 2 fatalities....Kevin, and Gunner Mark Ashford from 24 Missile Regiment RA.You cannot fight a war with one hand tied behind your back.

Davo, your nearly right Kevin Waller was from Bradford and to be honest Kevin was not attached as such he actually had applied for a permenant transfer to 1WFR not just an attachment for the tour which was almost through and processed and if he had survived the tour Kevin would not have returned to 50 missile regt he was to stay with 1 WFR.
That is why it still rankles with me that on the woofers memorial at Crich Kevins name is missing from the 1982 tour roll of honour when in fact he was killed serving with us and was one of us as his transfer was permenant NOT an attachment , Kevin Wallers name should be on our Northern Ireland roll of honour at the Crich memorial and the 1 WFR association should take that on board it is ridiculous his name not being included.

I have posted the reply I got from RHQ Mercians in a different thread.
I know it rankles with a lot of lads when they see that attached personnel are not included on their ROHs. You would think that all those RCT lads and other attached earned that right but I suppose it harks back to the Regimental system that is sadly being phased out due to the cuts and amalgamations.
I've had an ongoing discussion with the RRW about their refusal to include Pte William Davies, the young lad murdered at Lichfield train station, 1 June 1990, and Pte Gary Channing who was run over whilst manning a VCP at Magherfelt, 21 November 1986. Their argument is that Pte Davies had not joined the battalion despite being badged RRW, and Pte Channing's was an accident. To be honest, I thought their attitude to be very blinkered. All immaterial now as RRW (2 Royal Welsh) are being disbanded and no doubt their ROH board will end up gathering dust in a cellar under Cardiff Castle.
Regardless of all that, we at NIVA make no distinction and all our fallen are treated with the same honour. You cannot fight a war with one hand tied behind your back.
