Royal Marine from 45 Cdo killed in Afghanistan on 14 February

It is with deepest regret that the Ministry of Defence must announce the death of a Royal Marine from 45 Commando Royal Marines today, Saturday 14 February 2009.

The Royal Marine died as a result of wounds sustained from enemy fire in an area to the south west of Sangin, in Northern Helmand.

He was part of a patrol operating in support of an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team. Unfortunately he died of his wounds as he was being flown to the hospital.

Spokesperson for Task Force Helmand, Commander Paula Rowe, said:

"Each loss is keenly felt by all of Task Force Helmand and we extend our heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends and colleagues at this time of great sadness."

Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.

Darren Smith, known as 'Daz', was born on 6 December 1981 and lived in Fleetwood, Lancashire. He joined X-ray Company in July 2008 immediately after completing Royal Marines Commando Recruit Training. He was enormously popular with all of the other members of X-ray Company. Daz was immensely proud to be a Royal Marine and died as he lived, leading from the front. He was brave to the last and he leaves a gap in X-ray Company that is irreplaceable.

During the quieter times of the deployment when relaxed and amongst his mates, He would always speak of his 2 year old daughter, Keira, of whom he was immensely proud. He was a devoted and loyal father and his thoughts would quickly turn to his loving girlfriend, Kelly who he had been with since childhood.

Having read his write up on the Defence site I just can't help thinking about how long it had been since he passed out of training, his age and what he left behind. My thoughts are with his family.

                Stand easy Darren

Standing watching as the wreath is laid
Memories and faces that had begun to fade
Seeing soldiers so young and so bold
Now knowing so many wouldn’t grow old

Today the faces of so many I do see
Memories of them always haunting me
As Marines at War so much we did share
Wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for those who did care

So many not returning to be here with me
I wish you could see all the faces I see
But for today their memory is shared by all
Never forget these men who are forever so tall

So lay the wreath on the memorial’s cold stone
And remember all those who didn’t make it home
And take a glance over and you will see
For all my lost buddies are standing here with me

                  Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan

Marine Darren Smith is being buried on wednesday 4th March in his home town of Fleetwood, where I live. I gave Amos's poem to the family and were most appreciated of the support from websites such as this, it is also posted on the notice board of the King's Own Old Comrades Club in the town. At present, I believe there will be around 20 of the Blackpool Standard Bearers on parade at the cemetry, as well as a substantial number of ex-service personnel from the local area. We shall remember.
