It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that a soldier from 1st Battalion Welsh Guards has been killed in Helmand Province today, Sunday 5 July 2009.
The soldier was killed in a contact explosion while he was on a deliberate operation near Gereshk,
Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson said:
"It is with extreme sadness that I must report the death of a brave soldier. He laid down his life for his country and for the good people of Afghanistan. We grieve for his loss and join with his family and friends to mourn his passing; he will always be remembered."
Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
