It is with great sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm that a soldier from The 2nd Battalion The Rifles was killed in Afghanistan yesterday, 16 July 2009.
The soldier was killed as a result of an explosion that happened whilst on a foot patrol near Gereshk, central Helmand Province yesterday afternoon.
Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson, said:
"It is with extreme sadness that I must report the death of a brave soldier. He laid down his life for his country and for the good people of Afghanistan. We grieve for his loss and join with his family and friends to mourn his passing; he will always be remembered."
Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
