I met Paul in 1976 when I was posted to training company in Winchester after completing my junior service. He had joined up as a potential officer but had to work his way up through the ranks before receiving a commission. He served for over thirty years and transferred to The Rifles when the RGJ were disbanded. Tragically Paul lost his life serving in Iraq in 2007 in a mortar attack.

Major Paul Harding was killed by mortar fire while securing a route for a supply convoy. Maj Harding, who was a rifleman for 30 years, was married with two teenage sons. At his funeral service at Winchester Cathedral, his colleague former Maj Nick Haddock spoke of Maj Harding's "selfless devotion" to his family and duty."
